The Common Pleco, also known by the scientific name Hypostomus plecostomus, is a freshwater catfish native to South America. It is commonly bred in captivity and popular in aquariums around the world due to its unique appearance and ability to clean algae from aquarium walls and decor.

The Common Pleco is a bottom-dwelling fish that can reach a maximum length of around 60 cm. It has an elongated, flat body, a broad, flat head with a suction cup-like mouth that allows it to attach firmly to surfaces. Its color varies from dark brown to black with light spots or stripes on the body.

This fish is an effective algae cleaner, but it is also omnivorous and needs a balanced diet including green vegetables, meat foods and fish pellets. It is compatible with most other species of community aquarium fish, but it can become territorial and aggressive toward other Plecos if kept in the same aquarium.

The Common Pleco is fairly easy to keep in captivity, but it needs an aquarium of at least 200 liters with adequate filtration to maintain good water quality. It is important to provide hiding places and sufficient space for the fish to move freely. Like all fish, it also needs clean water and good living conditions to stay healthy and thrive.
