The zigzag eel (Mastacembelus armatus) is a fascinating freshwater fish, prized in aquariums for its unique appearance and interesting behavior. Native to Southeast Asia, it is distinguished by its elongated body adorned with highly visible zigzag patterns that give it its name.
This eel is nocturnal and quite shy, spending much of its time hidden in crevices or under roots. It is carnivorous and feeds mainly on small invertebrates, worms, and sometimes small fish. Its curious behavior makes it an excellent fish to observe, but it requires a well-designed aquarium with hiding places and a soft substrate to avoid injury.
The zigzag eel can reach a respectable size, often around 30 to 40 cm, so it is important to have a spacious aquarium. Despite its eel-like appearance, it is a peaceful fish, but it can prey on small tank inhabitants, so aquarium companions must be chosen carefully.
