Seachem MatrixCarbon is a professional-grade activated carbon filter media, designed in spherical beads to ensure optimal hydrodynamics, maximum water flow, and to provide ideal macroporous attachment sites for the growth of beneficial bacteria.
These macropores also play a role in mechanical filtration, by removing larger organic molecules like nitrogenous waste.

The media has a very low ash content, which results in minimal impact on pH levels; even when mixed with distilled water, the pH will never exceed 7.0.
Compared to other major brands, Seachem MatrixCarbon has the lowest detectable content of releasable phosphates, while offering twice the performance in terms of total capacity to remove organic matter from the aquarium, adsorption rate, and duration of use.
