Apistogramma cacatuoides
The Apistogramma cacatuoides, or cockatoo dwarf cichlid, is a freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of South America, particularly the Amazon basin. It is highly prized in aquariology for its vibrant colors and crest-shaped fins in males.
Aquarium care
An aquarium of at least 60 liters is necessary for a pair or a trio (1 male, 2 females). It should contain hiding places (roots, caves) and dense vegetation to provide retreat areas. They cohabit well with non-aggressive fish such as small tetras or corydoras.
Feeding
They are omnivores with a preference for carnivorous prey: live, frozen foods and high-quality pellets.
This robust and colorful fish is good for aquarists wishing to observe fascinating territorial behaviors in a peaceful setting.
