Keyhole Cichlid (Cleithracara maronii)

The Keyhole Cichlid is a peaceful South American fish native to the calm, slightly acidic rivers of Guyana and Venezuela. Its name comes from the dark, keyhole-shaped spot on its sides, particularly visible when stressed or during mating. Reaching 10 to 12 cm, it is one of the calmest cichlids, ideal for a community aquarium.

Behavior and Lifestyle
This is a timid species that thrives in pairs or small groups, relaxing quietly in the mid-to-lower areas of the tank. Unlike many cichlids, it is neither quarrelsome nor a plant destroyer.

Ideal Conditions

  • Temperature: 24 to 28 °C

  • pH: 6.0 to 7.5

  • Water: soft to moderately hard
A planted aquarium with roots and hiding spots helps it feel secure. Dim lighting and gentle filtration are suitable for its natural habitat.

Diet
An opportunistic omnivore, it accepts quality dry foods, live or frozen prey (shrimp and bloodworms), and appreciates a vegetable supplement.

In Summary
The Keyhole Cichlid is a robust, peaceful, and discreet fish, good for aquarists looking for a community cichlid without aggressive behaviors. Easy to maintain, it reveals beautiful golden hues and endearing behavior when well acclimated.
