Corydoras barbatus (Bearded Corydoras)

The Corydoras barbatus is a South American catfish species belonging to the Callichthyidae family, highly prized by aquarists for its imposing appearance and peaceful demeanor. Originating mainly from the freshwaters of Brazil (coastal rivers in the southeast), it lives in areas with moderate currents, often with a sandy substrate and submerged roots.

Morphology and Dimorphism

  • Size: 8 to 12 cm, making it one of the largest Corydoras species.

  • Elongated body, covered in protective bony plates.

  • Coloration: light brown tone with dark speckled patterns, giving it a discreet but elegant appearance.

  • Marked sexual dimorphism:

    • The adult male develops long, pointed dorsal and pectoral fins, and often has a more "bearded" appearance with its odontodes (small rough outgrowths).

    • The female is rounder and more massive, with shorter fins.

Behavior

A peaceful and gregarious fish, it should be kept in a group of at least 5 to 6 individuals to feel secure. Like other Corydoras, it spends a lot of time sifting through the substrate with its barbels in search of food.

Maintenance Parameters

  • Temperature: 22 – 26 °C

  • pH: 6.0 – 7.5

  • Hardness: 2 – 12 dGH

  • Prefers a spacious aquarium (minimum 200 liters) with a fine sand substrate to prevent wear on its barbels. Hiding places (roots, rocks, dense plants) are essential.

Diet

Opportunistic omnivore: accepts a varied diet consisting of sinking pellets, bottom-feeder tablets, bloodworms, larvae, and blanched vegetables.
