Potassium is one of many essential macronutrients, alongside nitrogen, phosphorus, and others, that aquatic plants require for healthy growth and development. When deficient, potassium becomes a limiting factor, and its absence can lead to an unsightly yellowing of older leaves.

In a low-mineral aquarium, potassium can be quickly depleted. The most common sources of potassium in an aquarium are potassium nitrate and potassium phosphate, but these compounds also raise nitrogen and phosphorus levels, making it difficult to precisely adjust the NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) ratio.
