The Giant Danio
The Giant Danio (Devario aequipinnatus) is a vibrant and colorful fish native to Southeast Asia. Appreciated for its hardiness and active behavior, it is ideal for community aquariums. Here's how to care for them:
Water Temperature and Conditions
- Temperature: Between 22 and 28 °C.
- pH: Neutral to slightly alkaline, between 6.5 and 7.5.
- Hardness: Soft to moderate, between 5 and 15 dGH.
- Filtration: These fish are active and appreciate well-oxygenated water with moderate current.
Behavior
- They are very active and playful fish, good for adding movement to the aquarium.
- They are peaceful, but their overflowing energy can stress slower or shyer fish.
- The Giant Danio is a schooling species: keep them in a group of 6 or more individuals so they feel secure and to limit aggressive behavior.
Food
- They are omnivores. Their diet can include:
- Live or frozen foods: daphnia, bloodworms.
- Pellets and flakes: good quality, suitable for tropical fish.
- Supplement with blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini to vary their diet.
Size and Ideal Aquarium
- They measure about 10 to 12 cm at maturity.
- An aquarium of 200 liters or more is recommended to provide them with the necessary space to swim freely.
- Furnish the aquarium with sturdy plants (as they can damage them), open swimming areas, and a neutral substrate.
Compatibility
- The Giant Danio does well with active and robust fish, such as Barbs, Gouramis, or Rasboras.
- Avoid associating them with fish that are too small or slow, such as Bettas or dwarf catfish, which they could stress.
Tips for Their Well-being
- Maintain stable water quality with regular changes.
- Provide a moderate current in the aquarium to mimic their natural habitat.
- Provide moderate lighting and hiding places to balance their activity.
With proper care and a suitable environment, Giant Danios add vitality and color to your aquarium. Their dynamic personality is a true spectacle to behold!
