The Glass Catfish, also known as the ghost catfish, is a freshwater fish native to the rivers and tributaries of Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia. This small fish is particularly remarkable for its almost complete transparency, which allows it to camouflage itself in its natural environment and protect itself from predators. Its internal organs, such as the heart and intestines, can be observed through its body, hence its name.
On average, it measures between 6 and 8 cm long, but it can reach up to 10 cm under good conditions. It has a slender silhouette and a fast, fluid swimming motion, which adds to its delicate and graceful character. The Glass Catfish is a peaceful fish that thrives in well-planted aquariums, with hiding places and open spaces for swimming. It prefers to live in groups, as it feels more comfortable when surrounded by its congeners.
This fish prefers soft, slightly acidic water, with a temperature between 24 and 28°C. It is sensitive to sudden changes in parameters, so it is important to maintain stable conditions. The Glass Catfish can be fed with live or frozen foods, as well as good quality flakes. Although it is easy to feed, it can be a little shy and hide when it feels threatened or stressed.
Due to its fragile nature and low resistance to variations in water conditions, the Glass Catfish is recommended for experienced aquarists. But, when properly cared for, it can live for 5 to 7 years, adding a unique and captivating touch to a community aquarium.F
