Cape Lopez Killifish (Aphyosemion australe)

The Cape Lopez Killifish, scientifically named Aphyosemion australe, is a freshwater fish native to the swamps and slow-moving streams of West Africa, mainly Gabon. Appreciated for its vibrant colors and peaceful demeanor, it is a popular choice among aquarists.

Physical Characteristics

The Cape Lopez Killifish generally measures between 5 and 6 cm (2 to 2.4 inches) as an adult. There are several color variants, the most common being bright orange (called "gold"), but brown specimens with iridescent patterns can also be found. Males are more colorful and have more developed and tapered fins, while females are smaller and have more discreet hues.

Care Conditions

  • Aquarium Volume: A minimum of 20 liters (5 gallons) is suitable for a small group.

  • Temperature: Between 22 and 26 °C (72 and 79 °F).

  • pH: Slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.0 and 7.2.

  • Hardness: Soft to moderate (between 4 and 10 dGH).

  • Setup: Opt for a heavily planted aquarium with shaded areas and hiding spots. Floating plants are particularly appreciated to recreate their natural habitat and provide a sense of security.

Behavior and Compatibility

The Cape Lopez Killifish is a calm and peaceful fish, ideal for a community tank with non-aggressive species. However, it can be territorial towards other males if space is insufficient. Cohabitation with small tetras, rasboras, or corydoras is generally problem-free.

Diet

This fish is carnivorous and enjoys a varied diet. It readily accepts live foods, as well as frozen foods and high-quality pellets.

Special Features

The Cape Lopez Killifish can live 3 to 4 years in captivity under good conditions. It is advisable to maintain a ratio of one male to two or three females to limit tension. This fish is appreciated for its beauty, fascinating behavior, and adaptability to various aquatic environments.

In summary, Aphyosemion australe is a colorful and easy-to-care-for fish, good for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking to add a touch of exoticism to their aquarium.
