The Royal Farlowella Pleco, also known as Sturisoma aureum, is a peaceful and fascinating catfish belonging to the Loricariidae family. Originating from South America, particularly Colombia and Venezuela, it is prized for its slender appearance and unique patterns. Here are the essential elements for successfully keeping this fish in an aquarium:

1. Temperature
The Royal Farlowella prefers temperate to tropical water. The ideal aquarium temperature should be between 22 and 26 °C.
2. pH and Hardness
A slightly acidic to neutral pH is recommended, ideally between 6.0 and 7.2. Water hardness should be soft to medium, with a GH between 4 and 10 dGH. This fish is quite sensitive to water parameter variations, so it is important to keep these values stable.
3. Environment
The Royal Farlowella appreciates an environment that mimics the shallow waters of South American rivers, where it lives among submerged branches and roots. Smooth roots, branches, and rocks will be perfect for it, as it likes to camouflage itself and cling to surfaces to feed on algae.
Dense vegetation is also advisable, with floating plants to dim the light. A fine sand or smooth gravel substrate is recommended to avoid injuring their sensitive bellies.
4. Feeding
This fish is primarily herbivorous, feeding on algae and plant matter. It is recommended to supplement its diet with herbivore pellets, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini, spinach, or cucumber), and sometimes pieces of wood as it feeds on cellulose.
5. Behavior and Cohabitation
The Royal Farlowella is a calm and non-aggressive fish, which often prefers to remain still, blending into its environment. It can cohabitate with other peaceful species, such as tetras, Corydoras, and Otocinclus, but avoid overly active or territorial fish that could stress it.
6. Tank Size
A tank of at least 100 liters is recommended for a small group of Royal Farlowellas (2 to 3 individuals), with good filtration and low water circulation.
By following these recommendations, the Royal Farlowella can thrive in an aquarium and offer a tranquil and fascinating spectacle in a well-adapted environment.
