Chinese Algae Eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri)
Often chosen for its ability to control algae, the Chinese Algae Eater is a robust and active fish native to Southeast Asia. It has an elongated body with a sucker mouth that allows it to attach to surfaces and graze on algae. However, be aware of its behavior, as it can become territorial as it ages.
Characteristics:
Adult size: 15 to 28 cm
Behavior: Active, sometimes territorial as it grows
Swimming zone: Bottom and surfaces
Water parameters:
Temperature: 22 to 28 °C
pH: 6.5 to 7.5
GH: 5 to 15 °dGH
KH: 4 to 10 °dKH
Tips:
Preferably keep alone or with robust tankmates in a spacious aquarium of at least 200 L. It enjoys moderate currents and shaded areas. Although effective against some algae, its diet should be supplemented with blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), dried algae, and vegetable wafers. Avoid keeping with slow-moving or long-finned fish, as it may bother them in adulthood.
