The Mango Pleco, scientifically known as Baryancistrus sp. L047, is a catfish from the Loricariidae family, prized for its vibrant yellow-orange colors. Native to the clear, oxygen-rich waters of Brazilian rivers, this fish requires specific conditions to thrive in an aquarium. Here are the essential parameters to know for its care:

1. Temperature
The Mango Pleco prefers tropical water, with an ideal temperature between 24 and 30 °C. Slightly warmer water is therefore preferable compared to other Loricariids.
2. pH and Hardness
The water's pH should be between 6.5 and 7.5, meaning slightly acidic to neutral. Regarding hardness, it is comfortable in soft to moderately hard water, with a general hardness (GH) of 5 to 15 dGH. As with all fish, parameter stability is essential.
3. Environment
In its natural habitat, the Mango Pleco lives among rocks and roots where it can hide and find food. An ideal aquarium should therefore include caves, roots, and flat stones to serve as hiding places and surfaces for grazing algae.
A sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended to protect their sensitive belly and prevent injuries.
Good water circulation is important, as this fish is accustomed to well-oxygenated waters. It is therefore advisable to use an intense filter.
4. Feeding
Although it feeds on algae, the Mango Pleco is omnivorous. Its diet should include algae wafers, but also protein sources, such as bottom-feeder foods containing spirulina, blanched vegetables (zucchini, peas, spinach), and occasionally shrimp or bloodworms to supplement its nutritional intake.
5. Behavior and Cohabitation
The Mango Pleco is generally peaceful, but it can become territorial, especially with other Loricariids, particularly in confined spaces. It is therefore preferable to provide it with sufficient space if other bottom-dwelling fish share the aquarium.
It cohabits well with other non-aggressive fish, such as tetras, Corydoras, or calm water fish. However, avoid overly active or aggressive fish that could stress it or compete for food.
6. Tank Size
The Mango Pleco generally reaches a size of about 20 cm at maturity. An aquarium of at least 150 liters is recommended for a single individual, with efficient filtration to maintain clean, well-oxygenated water.
By meeting these specific needs, the Mango Pleco can thrive and add a touch of intense color to the aquarium.
