The Gold Nugget Pleco, known scientifically as Baryancistrus xanthellus L177, is a catfish from the Loricariidae family, appreciated for its remarkable appearance with its dark body covered in vivid yellow spots. Native to the rivers of the Amazon basin in Brazil, it requires specific care and conditions to thrive in an aquarium. Here are the details for keeping it in optimal conditions:
1. Temperature
The Gold Nugget Pleco prefers warm water, typical of Amazonian rivers, with an ideal temperature between 26 and 30 °C. Make sure to maintain this warmth for its well-being.
2. pH and Hardness
This fish is accustomed to soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.2. As for water hardness, it should be relatively low, with a GH between 5 and 10 dGH. Like all Loricariids, it is sensitive to sudden changes in water parameters, so stability is paramount.
3. Environment
The Gold Nugget Pleco likes to hide and rest among rocks, roots, and pieces of wood. An ideal aquarium should therefore offer numerous hiding places for an environment close to its natural habitat and allow it to feel secure.
A sand or fine gravel substrate is recommended to prevent abdominal injuries.
It is important to maintain good water circulation and oxygenation in the tank, as it naturally lives in well-oxygenated and slightly flowing waters. A strong filter and a pump for a slight current are therefore highly recommended.
4. Feeding
Although this pleco consumes algae, it is omnivorous. Its diet should be varied and include sinking pellets, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini, cucumber, and peas), as well as animal protein, such as bloodworms or frozen shrimp. This mix helps meet its varied nutritional needs and maintain its vibrant colors.
5. Behavior and Cohabitation
The Gold Nugget Pleco is a peaceful but slightly territorial fish, especially with other Loricariids. Make sure it has enough hiding places and space if you have several bottom-dwelling fish in the same aquarium.
It cohabits well with peaceful fish such as tetras, Corydoras, and other calm freshwater fish. Avoid overly large or aggressive fish that could stress or dominate the Gold Nugget Pleco.
6. Tank Size
Reaching a size of 20 to 25 cm at maturity, the Gold Nugget Pleco needs a spacious aquarium, at least 150 liters for a single individual. Be sure to provide an effective filtration system to keep the water clean and well-oxygenated.
By providing it with an appropriate environment, a varied diet, and stable parameters, the Gold Nugget Pleco can thrive in an aquarium and add a touch of vibrant color with its magnificent golden spots.
