The L34 Pleco, scientifically known as Ancistrus ranunculus L034, is a unique Loricariid highly valued for its distinctive appearance, featuring tentacle-like growths on the heads of adult males. Native to the rivers of the Amazon basin, this catfish is relatively robust and well-suited to well-maintained aquariums. Here's how to properly care for the L34 Pleco:

1. Temperature
The L34 Pleco prefers warm tropical water, with an ideal temperature between 24 and 28 °C (75-82 °F). Stable, well-heated water is essential to prevent stress and disease.
2. pH and Hardness
This fish is accustomed to soft, slightly acidic water, with an ideal pH between 5.8 and 7.2. Hardness should remain low to medium, with a GH between 4 and 12 dGH. Avoid sudden variations in pH and hardness, as the Medusa Pleco is sensitive to them.
3. Environment
In nature, the L34 Pleco lives among rocks and roots where it finds hiding places and can camouflage itself. To keep it comfortable, the aquarium should offer numerous hiding spots, such as caves, roots, and driftwood.
The substrate should be sand or fine gravel to prevent injuries and promote its well-being. Robust plants can also be added, although it does not feed on vegetation.
Ensure good water circulation with a gentle current, as it is accustomed to well-oxygenated waters. An effective filtration system and good oxygenation are essential.
4. Diet
The L34 Pleco is primarily herbivorous, but it needs protein in its diet. It feeds on algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini and spinach), and a protein source, such as bloodworms or frozen shrimp.
Offering a varied diet helps maintain its health and preserve its unique physical characteristics.
5. Behavior and Cohabitation
The L34 Pleco is peaceful and spends much of its time in hiding places. However, it can be territorial towards other bottom-dwelling fish, especially if they compete for hiding spots.
It cohabits well with calm, non-territorial fish, such as tetras and Corydoras. Avoid housing it with overly dominant Loricariids to prevent stress or territorial conflicts.
6. Tank Size
With an adult size reaching approximately 15 cm (6 inches), the L34 Pleco requires an aquarium of at least 100 liters (26 gallons) for a single individual. A well-filtered and well-decorated aquarium, with shaded areas and hiding places, will allow it to thrive.
By following these recommendations, the L34 Pleco can flourish in an aquarium and bring an exotic touch with its singular appearance. This robust but discreet fish enriches aquariums with its interesting behaviors and unique presence.
