The Hockeystick Pencil Fish (Nannostomus eques), also known as the "Hockeystick Pencilfish," is a small fish native to the calm, slightly acidic waters of the Amazon. This fish is easily recognizable by its upward-tilted swimming position, hence its "hockeystick" name, as well as its slender body and contrasting black stripes on a golden or silver background.
This peaceful and social fish lives in groups, making it an excellent choice for community aquariums. It prefers a planted environment with shaded areas, roots, and leaves, mimicking its natural habitat. The Hockeystick Pencil Fish thrives in soft, acidic water, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.0, and temperatures ranging from 24°C to 28°C.
Its diet is varied, including small live or frozen prey such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and high-quality dry foods. This fish reaches approximately 5 to 6 cm as an adult and is most active at the beginning and end of the day.
Ideal for aquarists looking to add a touch of delicate movement and subtle color, the Hockeystick Pencil Fish is a discreet yet charming gem in a well-maintained aquarium.
