Pseudomugil luminatus, also known as Luminous Blue-eye, are beautiful small freshwater fish belonging to the family Pseudomugilidae. Native to Papua New Guinea, they are distinguished by their vibrant colors and lively behavior, making them an ideal choice for aquarists passionate about colorful and dynamic fish.

Characteristics and Appearance

Pseudomugil luminatus grow to about 3 to 4 cm in adulthood. Their slender bodies display orange to reddish hues, enhanced by shimmering reflections under light. Their fins are adorned with white or yellow edges, giving them a particularly elegant appearance. Like all members of the genus Pseudomugil, they possess bright blue eyes, which contrast beautifully with their vivid colors.

Behavior and Care

These schooling fish should be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals, although 10 or more are preferable to observe their full potential. They are active, peaceful, and sociable, making them compatible with other calm species, such as tetras, rasboras, or dwarf corydoras.

An aquarium of at least 60 liters with slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0-7.5) and a temperature of 24 to 28°C is ideal. They appreciate a well-planted environment with shaded areas and light filtration to avoid too strong a current.

Feeding

Omnivores, Pseudomugil luminatus accept a varied diet:

  • Live or frozen foods (daphnia, micro-worms)
  • High-quality granules and flakes
  • Vegetable supplements for a good nutritional balance

A diet rich in natural pigments helps maintain and intensify their vibrant colors.
