The Synodontis petricola, also known as the dwarf cuckoo catfish, is a catfish native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. It is highly valued in aquariums for its active behavior and its ability to coexist with African cichlids. Its elongated body displays an attractive brown coat spotted with light dots, and its fins are adorned with contrasting bands.

This peaceful fish reaches approximately 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 inches) as an adult and prefers an aquarium of at least 150 liters (40 gallons), with numerous hiding places and a sandy substrate. Nocturnal by nature, it becomes more active in the evening and enjoys sifting through the substrate in search of food. It is an omnivore and accepts a varied diet, including pellets, bloodworms, and vegetables.

The Synodontis petricola is also known for its intriguing mating behavior, where it practices brood parasitism by depositing its eggs among those of cichlids, leaving the latter to take care of incubation. Easy to care for, it is an excellent choice for an African community aquarium.
